As I was about to give up, a truck stopped and a man got off. He looked at the situation, made a judgment and went back to take a jack. After about two hours, we finished the job with sweats. We were both dirty. His wife took a large bottle of water for us to wash our hands.

“The price of books for our students is just getting higher and higher and, combined with the rising cost of tuition,it餾 killing these students,”said Peter Jason,a college professor. “Remember, students are one of the poorest groups of people in America. Almost half of them have at least one part瞭ime job. In fact, one of my students has three jobs. And she still manages to have high scores and go to school full瞭ime. ”
Textbook prices are traditionally high. Adding to that problem, many college teachers change textbooks year after year;they either upgrade to a new edition or switch to an entirely different textbook. This further hurts students because if an instructor no longer uses a particular textbook, that book has no resale value.
Dr. Jason decided to make reading a little easier and a lot cheaper for his students by writing his own book on public speaking. “Many books have an increased price because of CD睷OMs,lots of color photographs and pictures. I talked to my students, and many of them, like me,prefer to keep things simple! So,a few years ago,I wrote my own textbook. Compared to most other public speaking books, mine is half the number of pages, and one瞭hird the price. That is,$30 instead of $90.When I wrote a second edition last year, students only had to buy the 35 new pages, For only $7. 00,they had almost a new book. Now my loose瞝eaf textbook enjoys great popularity among the students. Maybe in the future more writers and publishers will try it. ”

Cellphones:is there a cancer link?
Could your cellphone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and wi瞗i could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.
Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there餾 a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia(白血病). Also there餾 a greater than 90 percent chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors. “It餾 apparent now that there餾 a real risk, ” said Carpenter.
But others believe these concerns are unjustified. Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don餿 support warning labels for cellphones, ” said Linet. “We don餿 have the evidence that there餾 much danger. ”
Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs(电磁场) and illness— so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It餾 funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. Who is your role model? Normally the answer to this question would be anyone around you who you find truly inspiring. It could also be someone like J. K. Rowling or Martin Luther King. Jr. , who have proven to be strong and intelligent people.
However, in today餾 world, stars are regarded as role models along with the heroes listed above, despite their intentions or actions. Teens attempt to imitate their actions for two major reasons. Firstly, to be fashionable and accepted by popular culture, and secondly because stars actions are so well documented by the media that it seems to grab our attention and turns it to following stars lives. Much of the reports about stars is shocking and exhibits bad morals or lifestyles that aren餿 right for teenagers. In addition, almost everything stars do is described beyond truth to make a shocking story by taking it to the next level.
However, teens must take responsibility for their actions. We can餿 always blame stars for influencing us. Only you have control over yourself and only you choose to do something. Our bodies and actions are in the hands of no one else.
Now, who ever said stars are role models? Whether they choose to be or not, stars set examples as soon as they step into the spotlight. With reporters following and recording every move they make, it is impossible not to be watched and then be imitated. These people influence teens whether or not they want to. Why should someone who doesn餿 want to be setting an example set one? So,should we look up to them or to people who are true and good role models? It餾 our responsibility as teens to know right from wrong, and it餾 time for us to take responsibility for our actions. In doing so,we will lean toward those inspiring people that want to be setting an example, and follow in their steps to be like them.

D. choose right role models according to different reports

Divorce—Social Problem in USA
Marriage, like other social instructions, is showing the strains of modern life. While more Americans are getting married today than ever before, the divorce rate is also disturbingly on the rise(one divorce for every three marriages last year).51
Women餾 easy and convenient life in USA
For most people, life is easier and more comfortable than ever before. Convenience foods from the supermarket simplify shopping and cooking. Household appliances like the cleaner and the washing machine have made housework much easier to do. Released from these household chores, many wives have found jobs outside the home. 52
Average American families getting small
Families, too, are simpler today. 53 With our frequent changes, relatives have spread over a wide area, the parents retiring to Florida or Arizona and the young people, after they marry, going wherever their jobs or their interests take them. Women have their own freedom.
54 While attending college, they often live away from home, sometimes far from their parents or their relatives. After college, they move to the city, find a job, and set up “bachelor” apartment. This is the era of women餾 liberation.
Independence leading to family break瞮p
But all this freedom and wealth had an unforeseen and in some respects an extremely bad effect on marriage. Men and women, no longer dependent on each other for food and maintenance, find it harder to accept the responsibilities. 55 On the other hand, there is a growing trend today for couples in trouble to try to save their marriage by consulting a professional adviser. He listens patiently while they talk, knowing that only through self瞮nderstanding can they solve their problems.
A. Young adult women have new freedom, too.
B. No marriage for many people nowadays.
C. Women are achieving economic independence.
D. In America, it is not customary for parents to live with their married children.
E. Why should this be so, and what, if anything, can we do to change this trend?
F. Here餾 some advice on how to solve the problem.
G. When happiness becomes misery, many couples decide to stop their marriage through divorce.

As we know, when senior students finish their school, most of their reference books are thrown away, which are still in good conditions. What a great waste it is!
I suggested that we should recycle all this books. On the one hand, recycling them can save a lot of natural resources, which are used to make textbooks. On the other hand, the notes on the books are helpful to whoever need them.
In fact, recycling textbooks has been increasing popular in such countries as America and Australia. We should learn from them, but make every effort to build energy瞫aving society. In my opinion, it is of many benefit both to our present and to our future.

Normally the answer to this question would be anyone around you who you find truly inspiring. 通常所指的榜样是任何你身边可以鼓舞人心的人。故选C。
48. D【解析】细节理解题。由文章第二段中Firstly, to be fashionable and accepted by popular culture, and secondly because stars actions are so well documented by the media that it seems to grab our attention and turns it to following stars lives.
Whether they choose to be or not, stars set examples as soon as they step into the spotlight. 可知,并不是所有的明星都愿意去影响青少年,然而一走到聚光灯下他们就会受到人们的关注。故B项正确。
