Originating in the West, abstract art crept into early Chinese oil paintings as far back as the 1920s. Nevertheless, due to ideological disparities and mainstream artistic education, abstract art was not encouraged in China. Not until Chinas reform and opening up to the outside world did Chinese abstract art crawl out of the shadows to become a distinct artistic school with strong individuality. The works in this

Return to Homeland in Dream – Exhibition of Shao Feis Donation

The exhibition included 45 pieces of the oil painting series Return to Homeland in Dream that Shao Fei donated to the museum along with 50 color-ink paintings. Born in Beijing in 1954, Shao Fei is a professional painter at the Beijing Fine Arts Academy. Her work is flavored with fantasy as well as a mysterious style of hyper-realism. Created during her stay in the U.S., the Return to Homeland in Dream series features oil paintings depicting a traditional Chinese garden– a manifestation of her longing for her homeland as well as an integration of the painters passion for traditional Chinese culture and her personality.

The timeless five-meter-long scroll painting Along the River during Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145) depicts social life in the busy and prosperous capital city of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). Nicknamed the encyclopedia of the Northern Song, the work depicts more than 800 figures ranging from high-ranking officials and nobles to commoners. In a size of 128 meters by 6.5 meters, the multimedia version blows up the original as large as 30 times bigger, and alternates between day and night scenes every four minutes. Twelve projectors display 691 figures in daytime and 377 figures at night along with sound and lighting effects. The work was once a highlight of the China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010.
