At some 30 million square kilometers, it is indeed a won-drously large continent, roughly three times the size of China.Almost one third of that landmass is occupied by the SaharaDesert, which intrudes into a dozen countries and is one of theprincipal reasons for their poverty. Another is the relativelysmall number of rivers that irrigate and drain the continent.
