The 92-year-old, short, well-behaved and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight oclock, with her hair fashionably done up and make-up perfectly performed, even though she is actually blind, was moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours or waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when was told her room was ready. As she maneuvered(敏捷地操纵) her walker to the lift, the nurse provided a description of her tiny room, including the eyelet(镶有小圆孔的) curtains that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she said with the joy of an eight-year-old who just presented with a new puppy. “Mrs. Jones, you havent seen the room…just wait.”
“That doesnt have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesnt depend on how the furniture is arranged…its how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it…”
“Its a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice to either accept changes and look for the best in them, or worry about if that may never happen. I can spend the day in bed complaining about the difficulty I have with the parts of my body no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the parts that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I make the choice not to focus on the things that have ‘happened to me, but rather the things that I have made happen.”

Most of them are in their thirties and forties, often well educated, although all ages and backgrounds can be found among them. A variety of reasons have led them to give up their work and the security it provided.
Some, like George, have quitted a job that was demanding too much from them. Others couldnt stand the pressure and the competition. As the English language has changed at a fast speed in this century, so has the use of the English language.
After the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) was founded in 1927, the particular style of the BBC announcers was recognized as Standard English of Received Pronunciation (RP) English, now, most people still consider that the pronunciation and delivery of BBC announcers is the clearest and most understandable spoken English.
English had a strong relationship with class and social position. However, since the Second World War there has been a clear change of attitude towards speech snobbery(优越), and hallmarks(标记) of class distinction such as styles of speech have gradually been got rid of, especially by the younger generation.
As the need has arisen, new words have been invented or found from other languages and introduced into English. Similarly, old words and expressions have been put aside as their usefulness has become less or the fashions have passed. This also happens to styles and ways of speech became fashionable at a particular time.
By the end of the 1960s, it became clear that it was not necessary to speak Standard English or even correct grammar to become popular, successful and rich. The fashionable speech of the day wasno longer the special right of a special class but rather a defiant(挑战的) expression classlessness.
The greatest single influence of the shaping of English language in modern times is the American English. Over the last 25 years the English used by many people, particularly by those in the media, advertising and show business, has become more and more mid-Atlantic in style, delivery and accent.
In the 1970s, fashion favored the careless pronunciation and a language full of jargon (行话), slang and “in” words, much of which cant be understood by the outside world. What is considered modern and fashionable in Britain today is often not the kind of English taught in schools and colleges.

The earth is sometimes called “the blue planet”, because from outer space it appears mostly as blue ocean, but ocean water is salty, and not easily changed into fresh water. The amount of fresh water available (that can be easily got) for human use is only a small part of the amount of water which is found in oceans or locked away in the form of ice polar ice caps. Of this available, 95 percent lies under ground.
Underground water is moving most of the time, flowing slowly from recharge areas until it turns into springs, rivers, lakes, wetlands or oceans. Ground water often follows the course of rivers or lies under wetlands, keeping rivers from drying up and protecting plants when rain is little. The upward and downward movement of water through the ground has also a filtering(过滤) effect, explaining the generally good quality of ground water. This means that ground water is not only better fit for drinking than surface water, it also produces better harvests.
Surface water and ground water form an integrated(完整的) system. But this natural advantage becomes a disadvantage when man-made pollution enters the picture. When underground water system is polluted by polluted surface water that is sinking downward, the damage is difficult, costly and even impossible to correct. By comparison, it is relatively easy to allow rivers and lakes to make themselves clean during a short-term period.
12. It seems that by writing this article the writer wants to tell us ____.
A. something about the blue planet
B. the advantage of the ground water
C. underground water should be well protected
D. surface and ground water form an integrated system
13. That ground water is better fit for drinking is because ____.

A. it has a function of recharging and discharging

time
C. it follows the course of rivers or lies under marshes and swamps (沼泽地)
D. it keeps rivers from drying up
