Ghost Street

This street is home to more than 150storefronts, over 100 of which offer a va-riety of different foods. In all of Beijingthis may be the only street that has such alarge number of restaurants. As for how itgot the name“Ghost Street”, two storieshave become the most popular.Somepeople think the name originated from the"ghost market" of Old Beijing.Long agothere was an open market in Beijing wheremany vendors sold vegetables, fruits andgroceries, but only after midnight.Eachstand was lit by a kerosene lamp froma distance it would be easy for peopleto mistake the shadows of the lamps asghosts, which led residents to call it the“ghost market”.Others think that sincemany taxi drivers frequent the restaurantsof Dongzhimen Inner Street late at night,(many restaurants are open until three orfour in the morning and some even thewhole night) has led to the name“GhostStreet”.
